I remember reading this in the one edition of the book I had, no longer have (yellow cover, only black text running vertically think it was groce press 1992), and in it I specifically remember Ginsberg’s testimony including him, when asked about the county clerk, being astonished that the court couldn’t see the sarcasm and satire. He being Jewish and asked if it insulted him, he said something like “can’t you see?” It’s not the same exact testimony I read before.

Was very interesting task to read the case, what Mailer and Ginsberg had on their minds. Never cared to read much Mailer beforehands; always thought he is just a tad too mainstream to my taste (and I always thought him a climber). I was of course aware about his “possesed by genius” -statement and some of his bright journalistic writings. Ginsberg is more familiar to me as a poet and a person… But I have to say that Mailer’s testimony turned up better than I thought it would. He had honest opinion about Burroughs and remarkable things to say about the general significance of Naked Lunch. All and all Mailer didn’t appear as an opportunistic man here
