"The Fluke" - I could barely get through 2 pages of that before tossing it aside. I didn't necessarily agree with his dad (my grandfather) on politics but at least he knew how to write. I'm the son (or so I've been told) who he set out to forget about. Trust me, he got his karma on that. Anyway, he's gone.

I was always struck by accounts of Stern in Miles' WSB bio so it's gratifying to get the bigger picture. You've done a really good job here. Much respect and gratitude for your efforts.

Stern may have been mad and irascible, but there's a certain purity to his literary efforts. He didn't need the money and seems to have eschewed the fame, even remaining silent about his connection to so many counterculture luminaries, which he certainly could have "banked". I haven't been overly impressed with The Fluke so far, but I'm still plugging away.

Thanks again for bringing this into the light of day.

Quite illuminating! Would be nice to catch a glimpse of the writings of Stern. Would family have retained or burned? Who has copyrite of Fluke?

I was thrust into the Jacques Stern phantasmagoria during my time at The Chelsea Hotel during the 1970s. For that reason I found this article extremely interesting as it provided insight to one Jacques Stern who has dissolved into the status of obscure figure of the Beat world. The Baron Rothschild, as he was commonly referred to at this time, and as I knew him, was racked with a variety of mania that could be mechanized to volatile weaponry at any time without warning. As they say, those were the days. Were they ever!

I knew Jaques in the mid 70's. He was a force unlike any other. He did rave and he did write, everywhere, on the walls, floor, paper, any surface available. We spent a few months consuming cocaine together. I never knew what was real or imagined in him but I enjoyed our intimate relationship. He was a mad genius who I finally could not be with longer.

I met Jaques in 1969 in Marbella, he had parted ways with his Spanish wife and was living in the Marbella Club. My husband was working as his PA, more of a minder really and he had a chauffeur. By this time he was taking a lot of speed and drinking a lot so after several days without sleep he was very paranoid and very aggressive and used his crutches as weapons. In Spain amphetamines were easily available over the counter from the pharmacy so he was not breaking any laws which was just as well in Franco's dictatorship. His lucid times were very few and far between and he was not writing.
I was surprised to read he lived until 72 as he was very frail and hardly ate, but he was a very strong character. He insisted on being called Baron Jaques Stern de Rothschild and rarely spoke of his connection to The Beats.
