Post script.. I later bought this in hard cover, and yes this book is expensive, but well worth it. It has equally fascinating insights into not only Burroughs but also Ginsberg and especially Kerouac and the whole Hippos saga. Also, you can't see the Michaux reproductions in the Kindle version.

Got the kindle despite the price as I had to read this, and very glad I did.. This is a fascinating broaching of the subject , occasionally raising more questions than it answers..e.g Lane equates Mugwumps with hieroglyphs and pictographs and makes a beguiling link with Michaux's mescaline visions but leaves many stones unturned.. Personally, I find Burroughs' theorizing about language very French, and the appearance of Derrida by name at least in the Third Mind boggling but these don't get a mention.. Not a criticism.. Also influence of St John Perse on Ginsberg quite a revelation, as is the discussion of Kerouacs rewriting of Hippos, a.g highlighting importance of Port of Shadows..
