I lived in Kansas City in the mid to late nineteen nineties, overlapping a sort of second or third Burroughs fame dynasty. Of all the so-called "Beats", only Burroughs resonated as contemporary - a writer of tactical nonsense and imbued with a timeless "no f*cks given" attitude. Kerouac and the well known exponents seem very much of their generation in comparison...old fashioned even - only Burroughs wrote in the stylistic of the future - and at some point I was born, grew up, and found myself living in relative proximity to him and I knew it. All of my friends got to meet him at some point, had stories to tell. I even had an ex-girlfriend that would drive to Lawrence once a month to have dinner, she got to know him so well. As for me, the closest I came was a reception for his gallery showing on 22 November 1997 - my 22nd birthday actually - and he didn't show up because he had a cold. Alas, death needs Time for what it kills to grow in...for ah Pook's sweet sake.

Great intro describing your fascination with lists.

Also, "the ephemeral is now and forever" is genius. It must be on a gravestone somewhere--if not on Andy Warhol's, it should be!

Re: The list, Consider the principle of wabi-sabi.As Koren presents it, this is the aesthetic of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. It values an old cracked handmade tea pot over a shiny new one. In books it is the opposite of seeking only an unblemished copy with a flawless dust jacket. There is the possibility that a battered copy will yield unexpected qualities.
