Burroughs many levels about Bukowski? On what planet? The guy sucked. Seriously. Only decent thing he wrote was Junkie. Everything else was a garbage fire. Naked Lunch? Worst crap ever. Seriously. Wake up. Stop pretending.

David,

Do a search for Saucy Magazines Checklist and you will get an old site that indexed tons of vintage men’s mags and provided images. There are some real gems on there that I never heard of. It is a fun site.

when we were 10 or thereabouts we raided the garbage bin behind the neighborhood grocery deli store. i can still smell the spoiled salami and iceberg lettuce. the store threw out unsold men's magazines every week or two. we got some classy looking mags that looked a lot like LIFE and LOOK. they were large format type photo-journals. glossy but black and white like TV of the period which puts it around late sixties. i remember pictures of naked women made up the main point of the mags. news and editorials no. the topless dress topless bathing suit craze was in full swing. i was amazed they had a picture of a woman trying on a topless dress in a NYC dress store. possibly henri bendel. she was half naked a little bit fat it was mid day a male store clerk was watching her and i guess was answering her questions and trying to make the sale. all quite routine and on the main sales floor with no screen to hide behind. myself i was in total termoil. at 10 i knew nothing about sex except that it was overwhelming. i was trembling at the casualness and seeming unrestricted availability of that naked woman. of course i had seen PLAYBOY mag but this was quite different. in a similar mag a young naked and well tanned girl was sitting on a sofa in a dimly lit living room with her legs wide open. she had been wearing a bikini sometime before because of her tan lines. again no effort was made to edit out her sex organs. years before HUSTLER and PENTHOUSE. how i would like copies of those mags. somebody should create a website full of this type of historical mag.

Magazines like Escapade were imitators of Playboy after their phenomenal success beginning in 1953. Looking for more information of these type Playboy imitators if anyone knows a good source--human or book. I would appreciate it!

Good article. I've been trying to get my hands on those Bukowski stories. Didn't know about Kerouac's column. I'll add that to the list. I'll skip Burroughs. He never really did it for me. Only think he ever wrote that I like was Junkie. Tried to read some of his other stuff, but wasn't feeling it. The guy tried to hard.
