Another interesting link, Jan Herman's blog. THis page is about William S. Burroughs. If you read the part on the right side, it's written, "I've also co-written "Cut Up or Shut Up," experimental fiction, with Carl Weissner and Jurgen Ploog (with a "tickertape" intro by William S. Burroughs)."

I've never heard of that book, yet another blurb.

Here's the link:

Ken Lopez has a copy of Cut Up or Shut Up (for $300!):

I didn't know Herman had a blog. Interesting.

He's got a blog which is indeed interesting. Concerning the tapes he owns, I asked him if there was a way to find them somewhere, I mean, if he planed to commercialise them. Here is his reply "I am trying to figure out how to pay for getting them digitized. When I do, they will be more useful. If you know of anybody who would help underwrite the cost, I'd be grateful."

So, if someone can be of any help.

Thanks.

Any idea where he's based? Getting the tapes digitized shouldn't cost much at all. The question is really what to do with them once they're digitized, since serving them online would be ideal but could be costly in terms of finding a host.

I'm based in New York. Transferring the video tapes (in the format I shot) to digital comes to roughly $200(US) per 30 minutes.

That's crazy. I can probably find much better than that for you. About how many minutes total do you have? And what format are your tapes? If it's a really obscure format, I could see that driving up the cost, perhaps... But let me know, because I can definitely ask around for you. (I'm in NY too.)

If you want to continue this part of the conversation off the forum, you can email me: info AT supervert.com. Or I can email you at the address you used to register. Let me know.

Next question: Any thoughts about what to do with the tapes once you digitize them?

I know it's crazy, but I was only able to find two places in the U.S capable of transferring the format I used: Akai 1/4" black&white videotape. That IS an obscure format, although when I shot the tapes, in 1971, it was the hot new thing.

I have three WSB tapes, one of about 10 minutes and two of about 20 minutes each. So, roughly 50 minutes in all. They ought to be in excellent condition, age notwithstanding. I haven't unwrapped them (much less played them back) in 30 or so years because I don't have a working Akai machine to play back on. Mine broke down long ago.

If you can help find a less expensive way to digitize them, that would be of great help. I also have tapes of Allen Ginsberg and other writers and artists from that period that are worth digitizing, too.

"Worth digitizing" means making them useful -- that is, enabling scholars, researchers, readers, fans et al. to see them.

Hm, that is obscure. Let me ask around and see if I can come up with anything.
