The new, unabridged audiobook of Naked Lunch is now out. It's read by Mark Bramhall, who occassionally sounds like George W. Bush, but also does some hilarious accents for some of the characters, like the English explorer: "That was the year of the rinderpest when everything died, even the hyenas..."

Oh dear....
So I've been listening to this at the rate of about 1 disc/night, and ran across a real mistake by the reader : in the passage from the Talking Asshole routine, "He had a number he called 'The Better 'Ole' that was a scream, I tell you...", the reader pronounces 'Ole as ¡Olé!, like he was at a bullfight or something.

Oh, puppy, puppy, no, no.....

'Ole is just "Hole" with the H dropped, like in a cockney-ish accent, right?! Maybe he got confused by the quotation marks. Anyway, an unfortunate blunder in the book's most famous passage.

There was a famous WW1 cartoon (by Bruce Bairnesfather, I think), that showed two frightened soldiers crouching in a crater, with one saying to the other: "If you know a better 'ole, go and find it". If nobody who would recognise Burroughs' reference to the Cockney spech he must have heard every day when he lived in London was involved in the production of this audiobook, it probably isn't worth buying.

That's a fucked up mistake -- but somehow it's really funny too. I wonder if Burroughs would have liked it? The Better Olé!

How could you even mistake that? I think the analogy is pretty obvious....
