Just thought I would mention that the NL@50 homage in New York takes place next week. I've been organizing the inaugural event, which includes readings from Naked Lunch, photographs by Kate Simon, and an excerpt from Andre Perkowski's Nova Express film. The readers include:

Eric Andersen
John Giorno
Jan Herman
Stewart Meyer
Thurston Moore
Simon Pettet
Jürgen Ploog
Genesis Breyer P-Orridge
Anne Waldman
Nick Zedd (tentative)

More information on this and the other NY homage events is available on nakedlunch.org:

Anyone coming?

I'm wishing I could come, but it didn't work out. I'll wear black in mourning all weekend, however.

Boy, I can't believe the myth of the adding machine "fortune" is STILL kicking around. Can't you hear him grumbling still? That interviewer didn't do much research... moved to Kansas city? Phew.

Yeah, those questions were brutal -- sometimes ignorant, sometimes almost hostile. Regina did a brilliant job answering them, I thought. Kudos to her.

That was pretty quality! Everybody who didn't make it to opening night, kick yourself now. Then wait five seconds and kick yourself again. I was flailing around aiming a 16mm camera, digital recorder, and still camera all over the place -- so as soon as I decompress I'll have some stuff online.

Yes, the Poetry Project event seemed to go incredibly well last night. There was a nice crowd of about 250-300 people. The night began with a 15-minute excerpt of Andre's film. With Burroughs' voice booming through the church, it was hard to get on stage afterward.

However, the participants bravely stepped to the podium to do their thing. Anne Waldman gave a spirited reading (with saxophone accompaniment by Roy Nathanson) of And Start West and The Market. Simon Pettet did a brilliant job with Dr Benway. Jürgen Ploog did a creepy Black Meat. (He has a great voice. Andre's going to ask him to read some Nova Express for his film.) Thurston Moore told a funny story about Sonic Youth going to meet Burroughs in Lawrence and then read Atrophied Preface. Before the break we showed photographs of Burroughs by Kate Simon.

After the break James Grauerholz spoke, striking an elegiac note and mentioning many people who have passed away. Jan Herman, speaking out the side of his mouth like a gangster in a b movie, did a funny rendition of AJ at Chez Robert. Stewart Meyer strung together some of the "boy, are we ever in hicksville" sections of NL, complete with redneck accents. Genesis Breyer P-Orridge did a brilliant rendition of the talking asshole routine. Eric Andersen gave a film-noirish reading of Hauser & O'Brien. John Giorno capped off the evening with a signature reading of "America is not a young land..."

It's not easy to read NL out loud, particularly if you resist the temptation to imitate Burroughs' voice, and I thought everyone did a really fabulous job.

There's supposed to be a story about NL@50 on NPR today (8 Oct) -- either from 4:50 to 5:00 or from 5:50 to 6:00.

http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/r ... hp?prgId=2

If anyone catches it, say so.

Sounds great. Can't wait to see video footage. That I wish I had been there goes without saying. But I just said it anyway. Well done.
