Does that dubious fortune-cookie dictum exclude the person whose point of view is distorting the experience they're learning from?

You talking about Jack? Bill? Sal? or Bull?

Sort of topsy turvy but imagine if Bull's talking past Sal right to Jack, if not bypassing his own author and warning his readers.

Like in Tropic Thunder, where Downey wins and argument by breaking the fourth wall, "I know who I am. I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude"

Or maybe Jack's trying to disguise his lies by throwing a negative (a fake character in a fake story actually says the story's fake) to try and make the lies more believable. Remember, ON THE ROAD's in the FICTION section for many reasons.

It's a bit out of place but IN A PRERECORDED UNIVERSE, THE ONLY THING NOT PRERECORDED IS THE RECORDINGS THEMSELVES would have been more bad ass for a promo poster.

That post makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I was riffing off the movie poster quote, which, to me, was the Old Bull character saying not to learn about things firsthand, and not go by someone else's distorted view. Which I find comes off as a disclaimer for ON THE ROAD, a book which is also Kerouac's distorted view of what happened.

When a character throws something like that out, it could be a covert disinformation tactic from the author. That, by recognizing and warning of 'distortions' in a work which claims to be autobiographical, we can be disarmed and trust the author more than we would have.

OR, to disregard the author's presence, it could be a lucid moment between content and viewer. A moment where a character shows independence and subverts the author's intent. That not just the Author can break the fourth wall. No flies on Old Bull, he suspects he is a distortion and plays it off on the reader at the Author's expense.

Of course the counterpoint to one bumper sticker slogan is another:

"All men learn from mistakes, the fool from his own, the wise man from those of others."

"he had every right to teach because he spent all his time learning"

it's this line from Kerouac that bugs me..... not sure why...
maybe if he had said 'discovering' instead of 'learning' .. and 'point' instead of 'teach' ..

'he had very right to point because he spent all his time discovering' -
Are you all right with that, Jack? Hey, Jack, wake up, stop taking notes in the corner and get out there and do something....

The guy was drunk, what do you expect? And the scrollbound writing of On the Road didn't exactly preclude precise word choice. How would a guy like Kerouac quantify WSB anyway, or qualify his depiction of the man on the page, when clearly WSB is a person whom, truthfully, nobody outside an upper-middle-class Midwestern background would relate to, and even then only sporadically because of sexual and literary and intellectual differences? How many people in this world truly can relate to William S Burroughs? I mean, seriously...

hmmm.. spooky observation that, G. and not without substance.. ..
i'd like to just cut back to:-
IN A PRERECORDED UNIVERSE, THE ONLY THING NOT PRERECORDED IS THE RECORDINGS THEMSELVES ....
....
now if i were a catholic priest on the lam from a posse of antinomian vigilantes, the first thing i'd do is put a call through to the Predestination Police with an all points alert and get them bastards to burn the books before the Word gets out....
....
meanwhile, back at the poster..... wish the film would start showing soon then we can get it all over with and get back to reading.....
