For sake of convenience and also as a unified reference, especially for those new to the forums, I have decided to compile a list of upcoming Burroughs publications. Please review the list and correct me if you see any errors, also, please feel free to add to the list as I may not be aware of every upcoming publication. The list is also in no particular order but I will try to cite the publisher. If I do not cite a publisher, feel free to correct me if you do know the publisher. Also, I am new to the forums and I just wanted to take this time to say hellow to everyone. Also, please be aware that a (R) next to a title means that it is not a new title but an old one that is being Republished (Update: titles in red are reprints and not new, i just discovered i could alter the font color). Also note that I have not included Naked Lunch @ 50 on the list because that was released just this month and therefore is no longer an upcoming publication.

********** List of Upcoming Burroughs Publications **********
(R) Cities of the Red Night -- Ohio State University Press
(R) The Revised Boy Scout Manual -- Ohio State University Press
(R) Queer -- Penguin Group

The Letters of William S. Burroughs volume 2 [1960-1974] -- Viking Press
The Letters of William S. Burroughs & Brion Gysin -- Ohio State University Press
[Untitled biography of Burroughs by James Grauerholz] -- Grove Press

Note: I have not included the hypothetical and alleged biography being worked on by James Grauerholz for obvious reasons. Wikipedia says that "Reportedly, he is working on a full length biography". I have talked to Grauerholz personally, who has neither confirmed nor denied that he is working on such a biography. Until then, it remains just a rumor.

Well, that's all folks and thank you for dropping by.

Publisher note: Viking Press is a division of Penguin Group, they are the same publisher and used interchangeably.

I was wrong about Grauerholz, it is confirmed and it is happening. He probably thought I was an idiot for asking him and thus didn't answer because he mentions it in his 2002 report where he says:

"This essay is an informal summary of my research on this period of William S. Burroughs' life for an in-depth biography on which I am still at work, for Grove Atlantic Press."

Thus I have added it to the list and also Grauerholz recommended Ted Morgan's biography of Burroughs to me, personally. He adds in his report:

"...there are only two published authors who have made major original-research contributions (concerning William Burroughs): Ted Morgan's indispsensable 1988 biography, Literary Outlaw: The Life and Times of William S. Burroughs; and Barry Miles' shorter but very insightful 1993 book, William S. Burroughs, El Hombre Invisible: A Portrait."

Queer is not being put out by OSU but by Penguin.

The status of Letters Volume 2 is not quite clear. There is a lot of backstory to the volume but I haven't seen an official announcement of its publication anywhere. (Have you, Crux?)

The Grauerholz biography isn't quite mythical, since the fabulous section on the death of Joan has been freely available online for a long while now. I believe JG has done a substantial amount of work, though I can't personally say just how much. Also there have been no announced plans for publication (that I'm aware of).

Before somebody asks the question, we may as well repeat that Evil River is not forthcoming, as Cruxdustrial has independently confirmed.

Other than those corrections, I believe that your list is correct as concerns announced publications. You never know what else might come down the pike, though... And could I mention that there are any number of previously uncollected texts reproduced here on RealityStudio? Browse the Bibliographic Bunker for little mag archives...

You should somehow do a collection of RS texts in a book.

My apologies for the mis-credit on the reprint of Queer. I have edited my post to correct that.

As for the Letters of William S. Burroughs volume 2 [1960-1974], it's status is not in question. I have corresponded within the last few weeks with Dr. Oliver Harris and also with Penguin Group and with James Grauerholz, all of whom confirm that volume 2 is currently being edited and finished up. I reproduce personal letters from Oliver Harris to me :

Dear Joshua,

Good to get your enquiry - and yes, it HAS been a long wait in between volumes 1 and 2... However, I can tell you that the sequel is happening and will be published in the next 2 years, I think. For a number of reasons - mainly time - it didn't work out for me to edit the second volume. (I am currently editing a new edition of Queer, to be published next year, and my co-edited Naked Lunch@50: Anniversary Essays will appear next month - so I have had my hands full...) I can't really add more details, but just to reassure you that more Burroughs letters are indeed just over the horizon...

......actually, the 2nd volume will be 1960 to 1974, and will very definitely be a Selected. So there could well be a third volume, one day... Bear in mind, however, that the nature of the letters Burroughs wrote after 1959 is fundamentally different to those he wrote before that date. His range of contacts expanded hugely, so the importance of these letters is much more cultural than creative (in the sense that the 1950s letters were).

Always a pleasure to be in touch with a Burroughsian!

My best,

With my best wishes

Oliver

Above is one of the letters he kindly wrote me.
(all sources confirm it will be published) Penguin Group estimated 2010 or 2011.

Editor note: If you want to ask about Evil River, please just read what the admin wrote above. Please do not bring up Evil River because it makes me sad and makes me cry and I'm pretty sure you don't want to hurt me like that. -sob-

Amazon.com has Letters 2 available for pre-order. The release date listed is most probably correct. Direct link :

Was it not mentioned in another thread that JG has scrapped his bio because there are already enough bios out, or something to that effect? If that is true he could certainly come up with a very interesting memoir about his own life experiences with Burroughs as opposed to a full fledged bio. In fact a memoir type book would be most welcome, to me anyway. It would be good to hear HIS story.

Frank,

I've not heard this. If you can confirm this, I'll remove his bio from the list. Up to you, buddy. Please let me know.

I have not heard that the bio has been officially scrapped. I believe JG has done a lot of work on it, but I have no idea how near it is to completion. It might be worth reminding folks as well that JG does have his own personal life and underwent a trying time in 2007 or 2008 (I forget which) when he was assaulted. Things like that can get in the way of writing a book.

The simple solution is, if he makes a cameo at the Naked Lunch @ 50 festivities and celebration in early July, ask him. Anyone, if you see JG, ask him if the biography is still on. That will solve that problem. I have to express my annoyance when it comes to forthcoming published Burroughs material, there is so much misinformation out there and those with the truth rarely and often never share it. What is with all the secrecy? I have no idea. For those of you wanting to check out Evil River by yourself, forget asking Amazon or Penguin Group. I'm serious. I contacted representatives from Amazon and they told me they don't know anything about it and it might be misinformation. So I contact Penguin Group and I can't get a straight answer the first time, so I contact them again, and again, and eventually they express their annoyance that I keep calling them. I'm just sitting back thinking....well it's really simple...tell the truth. lol.

But yeah, I did not know JG went through that, it's sad to hear that. Burroughs publications are a shadowy business at best. Filled to the brim with secret agents and such.

I don't think mysteries afflict Burroughs publications alone. There are a lot of variables that go into preparing and publishing a book. Ideas mutate, writers' lives evolve, contracts are renegotiated, publishers merge, markets change, etc. etc. It's just not so simple to say, "Yes, on January 1, 2011, this or that book will be done and on store shelves." Hell, the way technology is evolving, people may not even print books by then. Who knows?

I think that, if anything, there has been a remarkable transparency about Burroughs publications. Right now, today, you can name half a dozen Burroughs books that are forthcoming. You know how rare that is? Try asking the Kerouac estate what the hell they're doing. Try finding out Thomas Pynchon's plans for the next decade. My guess is you'll run up against even more mysteries.

Whoa, if I didn't read about JG's bio here then it was somewhere else. Will try to track it down. I did read that, that's for sure.

Thank you for posting this. Clearly this was anti-gay hate crime. I hope the suspect in question serves a lengthy prison sentence.

Did you ever track that down, frank?

By the way, I recieved a response from Viking Press on Evil River, for all those interested

"Thank you for your inquiry. We do not have plans at the moment to publish EVIL RIVER; however, should our plans change, title information will be posted on our website."

This is somewhat contradictory to the phone conversation I had with Viking Press who told me, Evil River is not cancelled, we are looking at a release date of 2010.

What a bunch of dicks...
