If you want to attachment mail me some Colloque de Tangere aspects I could translate them a bit for you (Free). I am interested in Tangiers not for the usual loiche aspects, but becaouse Kay Johnson (Kaja) went there around 1957 and Paul Bowles fixed her up as a wacky "Beatnik Archaeologist" character called "Kaha" appearing in (presumably) several Arab musical films made in Cairo. As usual she had to get out of Le Monde Arabe darned quick after possibly offending conservative oppinion on Female Liberation issues. Oh, and Heidsieck went to Chez Nicholas too.

Thanks for that! read up some Dworkin on Google, you are right, these ARE the real issues he is dealing with here. The good natured verbal to and fro between Isou and Debord was about Isou's film "Treatise on (primordial) slime and Eternity" he was wearing his napkin tucked in to his shirt and Debord said something like "are you (TU) slimeing (Bave)still? And Isou replied " esque tu Boi encore?" not Groucho Marx, but interesting for Cinematheque film buffs. Each was referring to the core emotive focus of the others work. Alcohol in Debord's case, and the Strindbergian primal ooze in Isou, who slobbered his food a little when he ate, especially when he conversed in "Schwitter Speak."

Elliot,

If you have the inclination get a copy of Reading the Illegible by Craig Dworkin, there is a great essay on Debord and eating and drinking. Your wonderful comments might make me pull it off the shelf again.

This is so great! Barry Miles gives so many tantalising glimpses of the interaction between the European Cutting Edge Avant Garde and the Beats. There are two names missing, Isidore Isu and Gherasim Luka. In my time in the area (61-62)I attended a small traditional French diner Chez Nicholas, by chance or whatever, the "Poesie Sonore" heavies plus Isu and Andre Michaux would regularly dine there presumably before performances. Debord, Michele Bernstein etc. also- there was one time Isu and Debord engaged in good natured banter. You mention Alison Knowles, she was there with Cage discussing mushroom picking. Finally don't forget the Barge Atalante moored by the river Daevid Allen and Terry Riley used that as a base with many others, linked by my friend John Esam. Daevid would take tapes and recording gear on a hospital trolley to Burroughs and co in the Beat Hotel before it closed. Harold Chapman remembers the trolley vividly.Daevid'e founding work with "Soft Machine" the Pop Group is well documented as is his later meeting with Burroughs in London to get his permission to use the name. John Esam appeared in both "Towers Open Fire" and Chapaqua, the connections are compelling and fascinating. Lastly one reson for Burroughs basing himself in London were the Painters Frances Bacon (and possibly Lucian Freud) whose work parallels Burrough's appocalyptic Interzone ambiance. There is a great photo of Burroughs and Bacon arm in arm after a drop of Champers swapping bon mots as they head for Francis'Studio. There was ONE Linked Western Avante Garde before the "POP/FAME" ERA for whatever reasons.

seeing all those covers brings memories of an exiting time. I didn't go to City Lights for that iconic photo, but I think this issues has the frist publication of my Apocalpse Rose. I remember giving Claude the image of Burt Lancaster. "Back in '63" cp
