Thanks for the comment on Rx/MD. The distinction between Rx/MD would give added significance to the Dr. Zeit MD caption below the picture of Burroughs. Burroughs would be a true doctor of Time and a worthy adversary to Benway. Also a nice in-joke on Burroughs' studies in medical school in Vienna in the 1930's.

This is a fascinating set of observations and I find your interpretation of APO-33 (which I had not even known about) compelling. I do have one suggestion about your interpretation of Rex Morgan in the cut-up story fragment as 'forward thinking' and 'progressive'. Apart from the square persona of Rex Morgan the newspaper cartoon character, notice that Burroughs deliberately spells his name 'Rx'. That of course is medical shorthand for prescription; Morgan is a 'prescriber' first, only secondarily a physician ('MD').

So Morgan is no Benway, but I would suggest that we have to regard him in a more ambiguous, neutral light, perhaps as a well-intentioned cog in the medical establishment who thinks of himself as independent but who still tries out sample drugs on his patents according to the marketing brochures. This time, though, he happens to test a very special sample drug on the beatnik patient.
